About Deep Creek Elk Ranch

Deep Creek Elk Ranch has been a privately owned and operated ranch since 1909. The ranch was homesteaded by Randy Neuhauser's grandfather. The ranch has seen many changes over the years. It survived the dirty thirties, gone through financial difficulties faced by the agriculture industry, and most recently in 1998 added elk as part of the commodities involved in making it what it is today. Before adding elk, the ranch was predominantly a livestock and wheat operation. The ranch consists of approximately 11,000 acres of land of which 5,000 are deeded.

The ranch is in western South Dakota located approximately 65 miles NW of our state capitol, Pierre.

The ranch setting is within the heavily populated cedar breaks of "Deep Creek" that leads into the Cheyenne River, which flows into the Oahe Dam. Oahe is the largest man-made earthen dam in the United States. This tranquil setting allows you to forget about everything and enjoy the peaceful outdoors.

Our elk roam on about 2,000 acres of the ranch that is heavily populated with cedar trees. This is where your hunt will take place.

We have been raising and hunting elk for the past five years. All of our bulls are home raised and have spent most of their lives in their natural habitat. We are concerned with CWD and protect and test our elk to the highest degree possible. Our elk are as close to being wild as can be when considering a closed environment. Several hunters with bow and black powder were not able to bag their trophy bull in the scheduled three day period.

We have included pictures on our photo page which portrays our hunting area. As you can see, and we assure you, that you will need to come prepared to work for your trophy. Sometimes, however, and that's why it's called hunting, the big one will appear out of nowhere from the get go and your hunt will be over. When, and if, that should happen, there are other hunts or experiences that are available.

Depending on the time of your hunt and the availability of licenses that need to be secured from the South Dakota Game Fish & Parks, other hunts including mule deer, pheasant, turkey, or grouse are available. No license is required for an occasional coyote, fox, or prairie dog that may come into your sights.

We have a video tape of our ranch that is available upon request.

Give us a call and let's talk.
